During the season Manchester United got off to a poor start in the Premier League, leading to the sacking of Jose Mourinho with club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replacing him as manager. Solskjaer led Manchester United to 6th place finish in the Premier League and also saw the club knocked out in the quarter finals of the Champions League after losing 4-0 on aggregate against Barcelona.
